Noctilien is the night bus network of the Paris region. Before discussing its history, it is important to understand the context of Parisian transportation. Historically, Parisians depended on the last metro or RER lines to get home late at night. Before the existence of Noctilien, there were night buses, but their frequency and coverage were limited.

1. Old Night Buses: Before Noctilien, there were a few night bus lines, but they did not offer as extensive or as regular a service as current Noctilien lines.
2. Creation of Noctilien: In 2005, the RATP and SNCF collaborated to create the Noctilien network, providing an extensive night service across the Île-de-France region. Noctilien was designed to complement the existing night services and offer an alternative to the metro and RER after their closing hours.
3. Network Development: Since its inception, the Noctilien network has undergone several modifications and expansions to meet the changing needs of users. Lines have been added, changed, or extended to better serve Paris and its suburbs.
4. Current Operation: Today, Noctilien operates every day of the week, from 12:30 a.m. (after the metro closes) until 5:30 a.m., with a frequency adapted to nighttime demand. The network includes numerous lines serving Paris and its suburbs, enabling many late-night revelers, night shift workers, or travelers to move around during hours when other transport options are not available.

The implementation of Noctilien was a significant response to the need for night mobility in Paris, and it continues to play a vital role in the lives of Parisians and residents of the Île-de-France region.
