This Electric Truck is Autonomous!

While automakers are competing with ambitious projects in autonomous electric driving, Mercedes Daimler Truck unveils its large-scale vision.

This innovative truck is based on a series battery-electric Freightliner eCascadia and is equipped with Torc’s autonomous driving software and the latest sensor and computing technologies at level 4.

Torc Robotics is Daimler Truck’s independent subsidiary for autonomous driving technology. Although currently only a research and advanced engineering project, this autonomous truck has the potential to evolve into a modular and scalable platform, independent of propulsion, for use in various transportation applications.

Autonomous and electric for long-haul

Unknown in Europe, the battery-electric Freightliner eCascadia is nevertheless the leader in its segment. It entered production in 2022 and has now completed 6 million kilometers in real-world conditions with over 55 fleets in the United States. The battery can be recharged to 80% capacity in only 90 minutes. Several battery and axle options are available, offering a range of 250, 355, or 370 kilometers, depending on the configuration.

Mercedes Daimler Truck has been developing and testing autonomous truck technology since 2015 with the unveiling of the Level 2 Freightliner Inspiration Truck, authorized to operate under human supervision on public roads in the United States. The company aims to enter the market with SAE Level 4 autonomous trucks built in series in the United States by 2027.
