The electric semi-truck Mercedes eActros 600 perfects its fine-tuning on the roads of Europe before its delivery to its first customers.

The first European rival to the Tesla Semi is ready. Before embarking on a vacation tour, the developers of the Mercedes eActros 600 traveled for 32 days across 18 European countries, covering exactly 10,697 km. They took great care to charge their two units of the first 100% electric semi-truck from the star brand only on public charging stations. And this just once a day, at the end of the day.

The aim of this real-world demonstration was to prove that the eActros 600 can keep its promise of traveling more than 500 km on a single charge with a load of 40 tons!

Beginning on June 11 in Frankfurt, the tour took the trucks through Germany, Denmark, Sweden, up to the North Cape in Norway, and then south through various European countries. After Tarifa, they traveled back up through Portugal, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, returning to Germany. The variety of routes taken allowed for the recording of valuable data to update autonomy algorithms. The battery of the Mercedes eActros 600, composed of three packs of 207 kWh each, thus offers a total capacity of 621 kWh!

500 km of autonomy without issues

This value is the one, certified in Europe, for the 4×2 version of the Mercedes eActros 600 in an ambient temperature of 20°C. According to Mercedes, this battery size represents the right balance between autonomy, driver rest, mass, and production costs.

Indeed, Mercedes estimates that 60% of its clients’ long-distance journeys in Europe are under 500 km per day. With a charging capacity of 400 kW, a 100% charge on a high-power network would take about 3 hours. When distributed throughout the day with mandatory breaks and nighttime rest, the autonomy of an electric truck becomes no longer an issue.

In the future, Mercedes promises a charging power that could rise up to 1 megawatt for a charging time of 20 to 80% in just 30 minutes! The only remaining question will be the cost of this revolutionary truck, which is at least twice as expensive as a thermal equivalent.
