After Tarifa, they traveled back up through Portugal, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, returning to Germany. The variety of routes taken allowed for the recording of valuable data to update autonomy algorithms. The battery of the Mercedes eActros 600, composed of three packs of 207 kWh each, thus offers a total capacity of 621 kWh!
500 km of autonomy without issues
This value is the one, certified in Europe, for the 4×2 version of the Mercedes eActros 600 in an ambient temperature of 20°C. According to Mercedes, this battery size represents the right balance between autonomy, driver rest, mass, and production costs.
Indeed, Mercedes estimates that 60% of its clients’ long-distance journeys in Europe are under 500 km per day. With a charging capacity of 400 kW, a 100% charge on a high-power network would take about 3 hours. When distributed throughout the day with mandatory breaks and nighttime rest, the autonomy of an electric truck becomes no longer an issue.
In the future, Mercedes promises a charging power that could rise up to 1 megawatt for a charging time of 20 to 80% in just 30 minutes! The only remaining question will be the cost of this revolutionary truck, which is at least twice as expensive as a thermal equivalent.
