Camion Mack MD

If the brand is completely unknown in Europe, Mack trucks have an American story that has been written since 1900.

In France, if you are asked to name a truck, you will say Renault Magnum or Mercedes Actros. The French for the revolution it marked and the German simply because it’s the king of the roads. In the United States, you will certainly be told that nothing beats a good old Mack ! The Macks were notably the great heroes of World War II by participating in the national effort like no other brand, except perhaps Jeep.

This is certainly what the creators of the Pixar and Disney franchise Cars thought as well. To assist and transport the hero Lightning McQueen, an ambitious NASCAR car, they chose a 1985 Mack Superliner which they named… Mack. Hard to be more clear!

An American hero with a European accent

But what Americans do not know, or do not want to know, is that in 1979 the French company Renault entered the capital of the manufacturer before acquiring it in 1990 following a takeover bid. The American industrial flagship caught under the rooster’s wing, this is a story that the Yankees preferred to deny. But this synergy helped save the brand through component sharing: Mack engines at Renault and Renault cabs and chassis at Mack. The acquisition of Renault’s American truck division by Volvo means that now the heart of Mack is tattooed with the Swedish flag.

Mack has therefore decided to electrify the key part of its range, the non-articulated trucks, and has unveiled a battery electric version of its MD model (for Medium Duty). The MD was first presented in 2020 in its Diesel version of course. Its emission-free version, the Mack MD Electric will be produced in Virginia, on the same production line as the thermal MD series. The newcomer retains of course stylistic markers, such as the grille and hood, inspired by the legendary Mack Anthem and Mack Granite, but the architecture is a pure Volvo product. One must know how to keep up with the times.
