Thanks to semi-autonomous driving and Bosch’s expertise, some Mercedes vehicles will soon be able to park themselves without human intervention.

The autonomous car is not for tomorrow, but manufacturers continue to make significant progress. With Tesla, Mercedes is one of the leading brands in this field. After inaugurating Level 3 semi-autonomous driving, the star-marked firm now promises that some of its models will be able to park without the slightest human intervention.

To achieve such a feat, the vehicle’s onboard technology is not enough. Infrastructure must also be adapted. This part of the work was handled by German supplier Bosch, which provides sensors in particular. Stuttgart Airport is also involved in the project. It is in one of its parking lots that autonomous parking will be inaugurated. In short, the EQS can only realize this technological advance in a parking lot somewhere in the world.

While no date has been announced yet, Mercedes assures that the German Federal Motor Transport Authority has given the green light.

A system available only on the flagship models of the Mercedes range

The parking operator also contributes to the effort. It provides a digital platform allowing to reserve a spot, access the parking lot, or pay entirely automatically.

The driver does not need to be inside the vehicle during parking. They can exit at the entrance of the parking lot and leave the car to navigate alone to its assigned space. The vehicle is even capable of taking a ramp to change levels. Of course, it will also stop automatically if it detects an obstacle along its path.

The automatic parking feature will only be available on Mercedes equipped with the autonomous system “Drive Pilot”. Currently, this equipment is only offered in Germany, on two models: the EQS electric and the S-Class.
