Mercedes Truck explores the possibilities of sourcing green liquid hydrogen from Abu Dhabi to Europe.

Daimler Truck, the parent company of Mercedes, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the United Arab Emirates’ clean energy company. The initial aim is to study the feasibility of exporting green liquid hydrogen from Abu Dhabi (UAE) to Europe by 2030.

To decarbonize transport, Daimler Truck is pursuing a dual-strategy with hydrogen-powered and battery-electric vehicles. To demonstrate the viability of using liquid hydrogen in road transport, the company’s Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck prototype recently traveled 1,047 kilometers across Germany on a single fill of liquid hydrogen under real-world conditions. Daimler Truck is building a fleet of Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks for customers, with deployment planned for mid-2024.

The United Arab Emirates anticipates upcoming energy shifts and aims to become a leading and reliable producer and supplier of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.
