Hyundai Wants to Make Hydrogen Super Fun!

And what could be better for that than a small SUV with a nice look? Hyundai has understood that new technology must be appealing.

Hyundai has unveiled its hydrogen fuel cell electric concept car called INITIUM. This Latin word means “beginning” or “first” and aptly defines the South Korean manufacturer’s push into hydrogen energy. Of course, this is not the first hydrogen model developed by Hyundai. How can we not think of the Hyundai N Vision 74 which could be produced soon, but it is certainly the first time we see a vehicle so close to a mass-produced model, in style and technology.

Two of the biggest advantages of a hydrogen electric vehicle are range and flexibility of use. Hyundai has equipped its concept with large hydrogen fuel tanks to maximize the vehicle’s range, but the manufacturer is also stressing the refueling speed, close to what can be found at a conventional fossil fuel pump. The target range is announced to be over 650 km with a power of 150 kW. To prove the seriousness of Hyundai’s approach, it is specified that these results are achieved with 18-inch wheels.

The concept showcases the company’s new design language “Art of Steel”. The design of INITIUM incorporates the HTWO symbol, representing Hyundai Motor’s vision for a hydrogen-focused future. The overall look is solid without being overly aggressive. A rather successful exercise in consensus.

As a cherry on top, the energy provided by INITIUM’s hydrogen fuel cell can be used to power and charge various household and personal devices via the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. An external port is designed to connect directly to a standard 220V household outlet, turning INITIUM into an electricity supplier.
