€100 Fuel Voucher: Who Is It For?

This Wednesday, Élisabeth Borne announced that a fuel voucher will be introduced for the 10 million most modest French people.

After assistance targeted at frequent drivers, a new government support has just been announced by Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne. In an interview on RTL’s morning show, the former Minister of Labour announced that a fuel voucher of €100 would be given in a one-time payment to the 10 million most modest French people.

50% of households affected

This aid will apply to all thermal vehicles and will concern only the first 5 deciles, i.e., 50% of households. It therefore concerns “the first five deciles, 50% of households”, she assures. People earning €20,850/year would be affected by the government assistance. Not everyone will receive it. An affidavit will be required to determine which workers need their car for commuting. The fiscal threshold will also limit the affected households to “about 10 million”. Consequently, the scheme should have a budget of 1 billion euros.

“This allowance, which has a maximum cost of one billion euros if all those concerned apply for it, will be financed within the framework of the 2023 Finance Bill, currently debated in Parliament,” reads the statement from the Prime Minister’s office.

This targeted boost from the executive is meant to soften the impact of the government’s “discount at the pump”. Initially 18 cents per liter until August 31, the discount increased to 30 cents on November 16, then was lowered to 10 cents. It will be permanently removed on January 1, 2023.
