The Swedish company Northvolt and the Taiwanese company ProLogium confirmed on Friday that they are opening a gigafactory for electric vehicle batteries.

According to AFP, NorthVolt and ProLogium decided on Friday to announce their major battery manufacturing site projects for electric vehicles (EVs). The Swedish company Northvolt has thus chosen to set up in Heide in the northern part of the country. This project will mark the company’s first outside of Sweden.

The Taiwanese company ProLogium has chosen to establish itself in Dunkirk with an investment of 5.2 billion euros. The President of France, in speaking to AFP, expressed delight over the expected creation of 3,000 direct jobs from this investment.

Starting in 2026, the two companies will supply batteries for European electric vehicles with a total capacity of approximately 60 GWh (Northvolt) and 48 GWh (ProLogium). This will power over 10,800,000 vehicles per year, based on 100 kWh electric cars.

A victory for Europe in the race toward electric car battery production, and a further step toward European autonomy in battery manufacturing.

What does this mean for the European electric car market?

The battle for presence on the European territory was not yet won. Indeed, the United States and China are fiercely competing for battery production. In April 2023, the United States announced the Inflation Reduction Act, which offered tax reductions on the purchase of new and used electric vehicles.

China, on the other hand, has had a gigafactory in Shanghai since 2018. The country is increasingly producing electric vehicles of Chinese brands. Their reputation as manufacturers of electric cars is well established: just look at the statistics from the latest Shanghai International Auto Show. Chinese manufacturers are prominent, capitalizing on their hold over the market of affordable electric vehicles and luxury market segments.

For European electric cars, the projects by ProLogium and Northvolt will enable production closer to Europe. Automobile manufacturers will thus benefit from shorter supply chains for their automotive manufacturing, provided they can source rare and precious metals.

Starting in 2026, might you have access to European-made vehicles entirely produced in Europe?
