Jean Todt, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Road Safety, kicks off the global campaign “My Security Council” in France.
The goal of this UN initiative is to raise awareness about risky behaviors on the road. Deployed in more than 40 countries, the campaign aims to reach 80 countries and 1,000 cities by the end of 2025. Everywhere, it appears on urban furniture, in airports, train stations, and shopping centers. This global momentum is part of the New Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims to halve the number of victims by 2030.
Global road accident figures remain alarming: 1.19 million deaths and over 50 million serious injuries each year. Developing countries, which account for over 90% of deaths, are particularly affected (WHO 2021). In France, 3,170 deaths were recorded in 2023, representing a mortality rate of 5 per 100,000 inhabitants, higher than the European average (4.6 per 100,000).
The most vulnerable users are two-wheeled vehicle users and pedestrians, especially in urban areas. In France, motorized personal transport devices, such as electric scooters, are increasingly involved in fatal accidents (42 deaths in 2023, +7% compared to 2022). Moreover, road accidents remain the leading cause of death among young people aged 5 to 29 worldwide.
Sixteen personalities are spreading prevention messages: seat belt use, pedestrian respect, adapted driving, etc. This Thursday, Paris hosts the official launch, in partnership with the Ministry of the Interior and the Federation of Firefighters of France. This event is part of a sustainable and safe mobility initiative, with a momentum that will continue during the Impact event, scheduled for June at the heart of VivaTech.

Among the celebrities participating in the “My Security Council” campaign are football icon Ousmane Dembélé, F1 driver Charles Leclerc, Oscar-winning actress and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Michelle Yeoh, tennis legend Novak Djokovic, singer and musician Kylie Minogue, motorcycle rider Marc Marquez, top model Naomi Campbell, actor Patrick Dempsey, musician Youssou N’Dour, actress Julie Gayet, actor Michael Fassbender, football legend Didier Drogba, double Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon, car driver Mick Schumacher, actor Jean Reno, and Tour de France winner and world champion Tadej Pogačar. National figures such as singer Laura Pausini and Olympic champions, with the support of the International Olympic Committee, have also joined this initiative.
