Mercedes G-Class: Its true place is far from the upscale neighborhoods

Presented at Eurosatory 2026 in its rescue and intervention versions, the Mercedes Class G reminds us that it is primarily a vehicle designed for the most challenging missions.

While some versions of the Mercedes Class G are displayed in front of luxury hotels and the trendiest restaurants, the German manufacturer reminds us at Eurosatory 2026 that its legendary 4×4 was born for an entirely different purpose. At the international security and defense trade show held in Paris, Mercedes-Benz showcases several variants specially adapted for rescue operations, civil protection, and special missions.

A return to the roots for a model whose history is closely linked to the needs of armed forces and intervention services. For over 45 years, the Class G has been used worldwide in patrol, liaison, peacekeeping, and natural disaster management missions. Mercedes claims more than 74,000 units are engaged in public and government services, some having exceeded thirty years of operation.

A true off-road vehicle

This longevity can be attributed to technical characteristics that remain highly relevant. The Class G maintains a separate chassis architecture, three 100% differential locks, a low-range transfer case, and significant off-road capabilities. With a ground clearance of up to 241 mm, an ability to climb 100% grades, and a wading depth of 660 mm, it remains one of the true off-road vehicles still available on the market.

Over the decades, more than sixty specific configurations have been developed: ambulances, fire trucks, mobile command posts, police vehicles, and border surveillance vehicles.

At a time when many SUVs prioritize image over efficiency, the Mercedes Class G continues to demonstrate that its true vocation lies far from city centers and trendy neighborhoods. Where the roads end, it remains an incredibly effective work tool.
