Renault Forefront Concept

With Forefront Concept, Renault and John Cockerill present a ground drone capable of carrying a tonne of payload. This teleoperated vehicle promises around 400 kilometers of operational range for civil and military missions.

Transporting equipment, surveying dangerous terrain, or evacuating the injured without exposing a driver: Renault Group is exploring new territory. Unveiled on November 3, 2026, Forefront Concept combines the automotive expertise of the French manufacturer with the defense expertise of the Belgian group John Cockerill.

The objective goes beyond technological demonstration. Jean-Luc Maurange, CEO of John Cockerill, aims to “enhance operational capabilities while reducing soldiers’ exposure.” This ambition encapsulates the appeal of this unmanned vehicle for high-risk interventions.

An electric ground drone capable of carrying a tonne

Forefront Concept has four-wheel drive and steering, as well as two electric motors. This architecture is designed to facilitate maneuvering and crossing difficult terrains. Its announced operational range reaches approximately 400 kilometers, with potential extension through a range extender.

Its payload can reach one tonne. Logistic support, reconnaissance, counter-drone operations, fire support, and evacuation are among the planned missions. Civil security and dangerous industrial interventions also represent potential markets.

Renault aims for rapid industrialization and cost control

According to François Provost, CEO of Renault Group, ground drones represent “a strategic sector.” The manufacturer brings an automotive recipe: reusing proven components, simplifying production, and preparing for large-scale manufacturing.

John Cockerill is developing teleoperation, autonomous functions, and mission equipment integration. A fully autonomous operation is anticipated in the long term.

Developed with the contribution of the French armed forces, Forefront Concept is set to participate in several exercises and tests in the coming weeks. These tests will help refine the vehicle. No price or timetable for mass production has been announced.
