The intense summer heat continues to grow each day. For cycling enthusiasts, here are our tips to stay safe.

The cycling season officially kicks off with the Tour de France in July. To help you prepare, we’ve put together a list of things to consider before hitting the road to conquer Mont Ventoux, faster than Julian Alaphilippe

Hydration

It’s no secret that hydration is crucial in daily life, but even more so when the high temperatures arrive and when you want to go cycling under a dazzling sun. You can easily attach water bottles to your bike, which will prevent you from carrying a backpack during climbs or simple rides. Fill your bottle at the first fountain you encounter. That’s what they’re for.

The body needs water, so every quarter of an hour, whether on the road or during a break, it’s recommended to take a sip.

Avoid riding in the hottest part of the afternoon

It’s obviously advised not to cycle in the middle of the afternoon, when temperatures are at their peak. The morning, when the air is still “fresh,” is the best time, as well as the evening around 7 p.m. To put it simply, try to avoid riding between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., when the heat is at its highest.

Riding in the shade is essential

If you want to ride, it’s best to do so in the shade. If you live near a forest, that’s perfect because it will block the sun. Sunny areas will tire you out more quickly under the intense heat.

No, you won’t win the Tour de France this year, so don’t risk sunstroke just to gain three seconds on your previous record. It’s better to take a “cool” ride to avoid incidents.

Protective gear

Even in summer, take precautions. A helmet remains an important element during a bike ride; it’s there for your safety. Some helmets come with ventilation to prevent overheating. Regarding clothing, there are specific cycling shirts with mesh panels that also help keep you cool; they are comparable to those worn by professional cyclists.

Now, don’t forget about your face, especially against sunburn. Sunblock, an essential item on a cycling trip, along with sunglasses.

Of course, be careful on the road—having a helmet doesn’t make you invincible. Always pay attention when using bike lanes when available, and otherwise, remember to share the road with cars.

Happy riding.
