Porsche acquires an electric bike motor company

By acquiring Fazua, the car manufacturer Porsche makes another step into the world of electric bicycles.
The days when Porsche was only synonymous with sports cars, long based on its 911, are gone. The brand launched an affordable convertible, the Boxster, in 1996, then its first SUV, the Cayenne, in 2001 – based on the Volkswagen Touareg –, and finally the Panamera sedan in 2009. Then came hybrids, followed by electric vehicles via the Taycan in 2019.
But even further from its origins, Porsche has stepped into more affordable vehicles. In November 2021, the manufacturer acquired a majority stake in Greyp Bikes, a Croatian electric bicycle maker. A logical move since it is sister company to Rimac automobiles linked to Bugatti, another brand of the VW group.
Future Porsche bikes with Fazua technology
In February 2022, another deal positioned Porsche as an investor in Fazua. This German company, founded in 2013, develops electric motors for all kinds of bicycles for dozens of brands including Canyon. After acquiring a 20% stake, the automaker stepped up in June and fully took over Fazua.

“At Fazua, we found a serious partner with extensive experience in the bicycle industry,” said the Vice President of Porsche AG’s Executive Board. “Fazua is well known among experts as a creator of lightweight electric bikes, and is an innovative company that perfectly embodies Porsche’s pioneering spirit.”
New Porsche bikes, and possibly scooters?
Porsche has been selling pedal-assisted electric bikes since March 2021. The more affordable one is a mountain e-bike, the Cross eBike, available for €7,990. Its slightly more “civilian” version, the eBike Sport, costs €9,990. These high prices are associated with the bikes developed with the manufacturer Rotwild, with whom Porsche plans to continue collaborating.

However, with the acquisition of Fazua, Porsche will create two joint ventures with another company, the Dutch Ponooc. The first will develop new e-bikes with Fazua technology and should significantly expand the catalog soon.
As promised in February, the second Porsche-Ponooc joint venture will go into the electric scooter sector. However, the German manufacturer has not provided new details on these products or on a launch date.
