Noordung vélo électrique pollution boombox (8)

From Slovenia, this very lightweight electric bike Noordung with a vintage motorcycle spirit reduces pollution levels and blasts music via a boombox.

The bike is no longer just a means of two-wheel transport with a chain and handlebars. The bicycle enters a new dimension in the 21st century with the advent of electric power. Various companies are rethinking the bicycle, like this Slovenian firm Noordung.

A vintage cruiser look

Gregor Fras founded Noordung, a new company aiming to produce “the first high-end smart superbike”. Will he challenge the Marseille-based Iweech? Not really, as their visions are quite different.

Noording’s electric bike first and foremost draws style from cruiser motorcycles. The very low handlebar does not make it ideal for daily commuting but will appeal to those who prefer an active or sporty position. At least, the handlebar is curved, while the fork does not include suspension. Without leaning toward the modern Harley-Davidson Serial 1, it features a rounded carbon frame and embraces vintage aesthetics.

The battery integrated into the frame, reminiscent of a fuel tank, adds a real originality to the design. It even mimics the cap and hatch, serving as a charging port. Its capacity of 300 Wh is relatively low but claims an optimistic range of 60 km. The electric motor is located in the rear hub, sourced from Ansmann. Surprisingly, this bike does not combine it with a flexible belt but with a chain and a Microshift AdventX 10-speed derailleur.

The 5-spoke wheels, equipped with Pirelli Angel GT Urban tires, are also made of carbon. An advantage for weight, totaling 17.3 kg. This is very low for an electric bike and allows for use without activating the electric assistance.

A fine particle sensor

Beyond its appearance, the Noordung electric bike features a pollution sensor. From the manufacturer Sensirion, measuring about 5 cm, it is housed in the battery casing. It detects fine particles like PM10 and PM2.5 (less than 10 and 2.5 micrometers in diameter).

The sensor streams real-time data via the Noordung app, or allows users to check where the route is more or less polluted. The company emphasizes that these particles are responsible for respiratory and cardiovascular issues, both in the short and long term.

An electric bike that makes noise, and costs a lot!

The box also includes a boombox-style audio system. With four speakers, it plays music via the mobile app, delivering “high-fidelity sound” according to the brand. A bonus for those wanting to listen to their favorite tunes without headphones or helmets, which are prohibited during circulation. However, it can be a nuisance in city environments for residents, cyclists, or drivers. Removable as it is integrated with the battery case, the boombox accompanies its owner everywhere. Its weight is 3.5 kg, which is reasonable.

As for the price of this original Noordung, you will need deep pockets, because the electric bike purchase subsidy remains insignificant. The price is €6,990 at launch for the first production series.
