Bike: Sharelock launches its connected locks in Nice

Sharelock plans to install 1,500 by the end of the year.

While it is quite difficult to be completely protected against theft, it is still possible to reduce the risk by taking multiple precautions. In Nice, cyclists will soon have a new tool to protect their bicycle: the connected lock.

Developed by Sharelock, a French startup, the connected lock is shaped like a U attached to urban furniture. It unlocks via a smartphone app. This app also alerts the user in case of an attempted theft. It allows users to geolocate locks on a map and reserve one in advance.

A Paid Service

Using a connected lock is free for the first fifteen minutes. After that, the service costs 50 cents per 24-hour period. There is also a subscription for €10 per month, providing unlimited access to the service. The U lock fits all types of bicycles (e-bike, mountain bike, foldable bike, cargo bike, etc.).

Sharelock guarantees that its device is highly effective. Since the lock has no keyhole, it would be particularly difficult to force open. Additionally, the materials used meet the standards of the motorcycle industry. The startup is so confident in its product that it commits to paying a flat refund of €200 in case of bicycle theft.

Nice After Its First Expansion in the Paris Region

In Nice, 800 connected locks will be available from the beginning of July. By the end of the year, Sharelock plans to install a total of 1,500 across the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolitan Area.

Sharelock has already deployed connected locks in the Paris region, in the cities of Meaux, Sceaux, and Saint-Ouen. The company reports that no thefts have been reported from its installations since launching the service.
