The Suzuki Jimny Nomad is not expected in France… and that’s probably for the best.
Suzuki launches the Jimny Nomade. A 5-door version of the charming little SUV that feels more like a punishment than an evolution
Since its inception in 1970, the Suzuki Jimny has built a reputation as a bold and endearing little off-roader. Compact, sturdy, and straightforward, it has captured a loyal audience thanks to its retro design and exceptional off-road capabilities. In its three-door version, it has always stood out as a model that goes straight to the essentials: maneuverability, reduced bulk, and an inimitable style. But with the arrival of the new five-door Jimny Nomade, Suzuki seems to want to break this tradition, for better… or for less convincing.
Launched exclusively in Japan starting from April 3, 2025, the Jimny Nomade ventures into uncharted territory. With an extended wheelbase, increased cargo capacity, and the ability to comfortably accommodate four adults, it attempts to combine the charm of the Jimny with the requirements of family use. While this version expands the lineup, one could say that its arrival in France is not really anticipated… and that’s not a big deal!
Don’t touch the Jimny!
Why? Because a five-door version of a model known for its compactness is a bit like putting stabilizers on a motorcycle: it breaks the concept. Moreover, the retro design of the Jimny, which is so appreciated in its three-door version, loses much of its charm in this elongated silhouette. One must admit, a Jimny in XL format is more confusing than appealing. A five-door Jimny is somewhat the antithesis of its DNA. Its elongated shape disrupts the perfect balance of the retro design that gives it its charm. It’s hard to imagine this “limousine” format appealing to fans of the original model. And in terms of engine options, the Jimny Nomade remains rooted in the past. Given the rise of electric and hybrid models, it seems completely outdated, especially in a context where energy efficiency has become essential.
Sure, it offers technological improvements such as automatic braking and adaptive cruise control, but is that enough to justify its existence? Not really.
Fortunately, this model is reserved for the Japanese market. In France, where the Jimny is appreciated for its minimalist format and off-road capabilities, this version has no reason to exist. One thing is for sure, we won’t miss encountering this “Nomade” Jimny on our roads, and we prefer to eagerly await the electric Vitara. Sometimes, it’s better to abstain!
