Lancia continues its electric ranges by relaunching the Gamma
At Lancia, the term renaissance is not overused. The brand’s entire strategy indeed seems to rest on this concept!
First of all, it’s important to clarify that Lancia’s approach is nothing truly exceptional. One only needs to look at Renault’s R5, R4, or Estafette to understand that choosing an icon from the past and projecting it into the present by adding the necessary electricity under the hood is not genuinely innovative. But at Renault, in addition to this, there are enough new models like Symbioz, Arkana, Austral, or Rafale. Mostly SUVs, but that is enough to give the impression of a dynamic vehicle lineup. Because when you only resurrect models from the past, you risk getting stuck there.
After Ypsilon, it’s now Gamma’s turn to return to Lancia. A model that disappeared in 1984, exactly 40 years ago. It’s not going to be easy to project a young and trendy image with that… But when we remember that the last creation from the Italian manufacturer, the Thema launched in 2011, was just a rebadged 2004 Chrysler 300, we shouldn’t be too picky!
The new Lancia Gamma will be based on Stellantis’ multi-energy STLA Medium platform, the same as the Peugeot 3008 or the Opel Grandland, so we can expect a new SUV, as the sedan niche is already reserved for the new Alfa Romeo Giulia and Giulietta. This last point certainly explains why the Gamma ultimately took precedence over the Delta, which was anticipated. On the engine side, there will definitely be hybrid and electric options, to try to appeal to a broad audience.
This new Lancia will be designed, developed, and produced in Italy at Stellantis’ Melfi plant starting in 2026. This gives time to see if the Ypsilon manages to restore Lancia’s reputation.
