The Corolla undergoes a facelift. The updates are not only cosmetic, since the mechanicals have also been improved.

A true global star, the Toyota Corolla has a somewhat more discreet career in Europe. Nevertheless, its performance on the Old Continent is far from negligible. With just over 146,000 units registered last year, the hybrid compact was in the top 15 best-selling cars. It outsold models like the Ford Focus, the Peugeot 308, or the Seat Leon.

Subtle exterior changes

To maintain this positive momentum, Toyota is carrying out an update. Aesthetically, the changes are minor. The grille pattern, the wheel covers around the fog lights, and the GR Sport bumper have been revised. Higher trims now feature new bi-LED headlights, which will also be adaptive on the more expensive versions. Toyota is also taking this facelift as an opportunity to introduce new wheels and two new paint colors.

Inside, Toyota has introduced a larger touchscreen (10.5 inches) and some interior trim updates. An entirely digital instrument cluster will also appear on higher and mid-range trims. The Corolla now also features a voice assistant and more advanced driver assistance systems.

A larger touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster: the Corolla follows the trend.

More power

Technically, this update brings real new features. The battery is now more powerful and lighter. Both hybrid powertrains gain a few horsepower: the 1.8-liter goes from 122 to 140 hp, the 2.0-liter from 184 to 196 hp. According to Toyota, this ‘vitamin boost’ will have no negative impact on CO2 emissions, which are expected to even decrease on the 2.0-liter Corolla. However, it does significantly improve performance on the 1.8-liter version, which gains 1.7 seconds in the 0 to 100 km/h sprint (now 9.2 seconds). The 2.0-liter Corolla improves by four-tenths, now accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.

The prices for the restyled Corolla have not yet been announced. The vehicle is expected to arrive on the market during the first quarter of 2023.
