BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, the little surprise that isn’t one

BMW takes advantage of the Paris Motor Show to present the second generation of its compact four-door coupe.

At first glance, this new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe looks more like a styling exercise than a new car. It is known that sedans are not very popular in France, but three-box cars are part of the German brand’s DNA, and the “Gran Coupe” style is somewhat a way to make this architecture appealing to certain resistant audiences, like that of the hexagon.

The front end is expressive, with a long silhouette and a trunked rear. The large kidney grille, a stylistic marker of the brand, features an innovative structure combining vertical and diagonal bars. The model sees its length increase by a small 20 millimeters, reaching 4,546 millimeters. The vehicle width is 1,800 millimeters, and the height has been raised by 25 millimeters, reaching 1,445 millimeters. Overall, it maintains a beautiful dynamic line.

Under the hood, the choices remain very limited, with two mild hybrid 48V thermal engines that will account for most sales, a three-cylinder gasoline engine and a four-cylinder diesel. The electrical system is directly integrated into the standard 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission and primarily helps to contain CO2 emissions. Yes, there is a slight gain in performance and driving pleasure, but that’s not the main focus; let’s not kid ourselves. With a maximum power of 170 hp, the BMW 220 Gran Coupe gasoline model goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, compared to 8 seconds for the Diesel variant. The line is sporty, but that’s where it ends. For more, you have to go for the top of the range with the M235 xDrive Gran Coupe equipped with a 300 hp four-cylinder gasoline engine and standard intelligent all-wheel drive, allowing it to complete the 0 to 100 km/h exercise in 4.9 seconds. But with an ecological penalty exceeding 25,000 euros, you won’t see many of them on the roads…
