His Bugatti is stolen: Mate Rimac chases after it in a Porsche!

Mate Rimac Bugatti

A Bugatti Chiron stolen with the keys inside, a boss hot on its trail, and an arrest in Austria: Mate Rimac has just experienced a scenario that even an advertiser would find excessive.

Clearly, running Bugatti does not protect one from unpleasant surprises. On Wednesday, October 28, Mate Rimac saw his personal Chiron vanish from the campus of his company near Zagreb. No need for sophisticated hacking or dramatic burglary: the keys were calmly waiting in the cabin.

A perfectly accepted habit. In his post on Instagram, the executive explains that he trusted Croatia’s security. Leaving the keys also allowed his colleagues to move his cars without interrupting his meetings. Convenient for the engineers. Apparently also for visitors.

The most astonishing part? The absence of the Bugatti could have gone unnoticed, as his colleagues use it regularly. It was a witness spotting a stranger at the wheel who raised the alarm.

A Porsche Against a Bugatti

Rimac alerts the police and then hops into his Porsche 911. According to his account, the thief already has an hour’s head start. But the Chiron carries a far more formidable opponent: its telemetry. Position, speed, fuel… The team tracks the car and relays the information to law enforcement.

After Slovenia, it’s off to Austria, where the police ultimately intercept the vehicle. The chase stops there.

At the police station, a new twist: according to Rimac, the suspect claims he came looking for a job before succumbing to the keys left available. Not the best approach to land an interview.

The boss even claims to have considered escorting the man back to his family. The police did not pursue this proposal.

The Chiron, slightly damaged, will be repaired. As for the keys, they will now enjoy a much less welcoming storage solution. End of self-service for the boss.
