All-season tires: this detail to check before November 1st

Are your all-season tires sufficient for driving in the mountains this winter? From November 1st, winter equipment becomes mandatory in certain municipalities.

Before hitting the road, a quick check of your tires can prevent an unpleasant surprise. From November 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, winter equipment requirements apply in certain mountainous areas of 34 French departments. And the mere label “all-season” is not enough to ensure that your car meets the requirements.

The symbol to look for on your tires

The key marker is the 3PMSF marking, represented by a three-peaked mountain with a snowflake inside. To comply with the regulations using your tires, your car must have four tires bearing this symbol.

Conversely, the mere M+S inscription is no longer sufficient. Your tires remain usable, but you must then carry chains or snow socks to equip at least two driving wheels. This distinction also concerns motorists who have purchased their all-season tires several years ago.

It is therefore unnecessary to automatically replace all four tires: removable devices represent another solution provided by the regulations. However, make sure to check their compatibility with your wheel dimensions and the space available in the wheel wells.

Even a simple passage is concerned

The obligation does not extend to all 34 departments. The affected municipalities are defined by prefectural order and the areas are indicated by specific signs.

It also applies to motorists who are merely passing through these areas. Living elsewhere does not exempt you from preparing the necessary equipment.

Before your departure, check your route, the markings on your four tires, and, if necessary, the presence of appropriate chains or socks in the trunk.
