What if a Japanese manufacturer put Tesla on the ropes?

Comment
THK constructeur japonais

Supplier to the world’s largest car manufacturers, the Japanese company THK has decided to launch its first 100% electric model.

While not overlooking the importance of Japanese manufacturers, it must be acknowledged that the electric transition over the years has been largely driven by Tesla and Chinese manufacturers. Other American and European manufacturers are indeed trying to catch up with the rapidly moving train, but it is difficult when they most often just replace internal combustion engines with electric ones!

Japanese brands, led by Toyota, Nissan, and Honda, have shown extreme caution by launching a few 100% electric models, but primarily favoring hybrids for the electrification of their ranges. A strategy that lacks flair but ultimately pays off, as hybrids are now the trendy models.

However, the 100% electric Tesla model is inspiring a new player in the Land of the Rising Sun. Founded in 1971 in Tokyo, THK is known for its machine tools and technologies that now equip the largest car manufacturers around the world through thirty-seven factories. THK has a substantial presence in Europe, including a factory in Ensisheim, France. Therefore, we are not talking about a fragile unicorn but rather a group with strong enough shoulders to enter the battle.

And since producing a car, it makes sense to showcase all the accumulated expertise over more than 50 years. The LSR-05, which will be presented at the European premiere at the Paris Motor Show, is not just a prototype, but a working vehicle equipped with several THK technologies such as four wheel motors with an integrated steering system, active suspension, and a contactless induction charging system. It is a large four-seater crossover coupe measuring 4995 mm long, 1965 mm wide, and 1530 mm high. With its opposing opening doors and sporty line, it certainly makes an impression.
