Volvo EX90

To achieve this goal, Volvo will transform its sedans into 100% electric models and even launch a minivan by 2026.

In its communication, Volvo sometimes plays with ambiguity. For example, in 2019, it led many media to believe it was stopping thermal engines… only to sell hybrid and electric vehicles, including mild hybrids (thermal engines disguised as electric). Repeat in 2022, during the presentation of the new electric SUV Volvo EX90, which seemed to be the sole replacement for the previous generation XC90. However, this model will indeed have a third version this year, as a hybrid.

3 SUVs and 2 Volvo sedans by 2026

Nevertheless, the Swedish brand has made the bet to sell only 100% electric cars by 2030. But to reach this goal, the entire current lineup must be transformed. The new Volvo XC90 is therefore the last thermal dinosaur. This is no surprise, as a car has an approximate career span of about 7 years, here from 2023 to 2030.

Reuters has learned what the Swedish automaker is preparing. According to its sources, Volvo will launch 3 electric SUVs and 2 electric sedans by 2026. This push will allow its Australian branch to become electric within three years. What are these models? We should see the future Volvo EX30, a compact SUV similar to the Smart #1, and the Zeekr X. The EX60 should follow, along with the ES60 and ES90 sedans, counterparts to the hybrid S60 and S90.

And… an electric minivan!

It is important to remember that Volvo is owned by Geely (82%), a Chinese group holding around twenty brands, including Polestar, Smart, and Zeekr. Just recently, the premium brand Zeekr launched an electric minivan, the Zeekr 009, last fall. Volvo will base its own 7-seater family model on this platform, also by 2026.
