There are more electrified cars than gasoline cars in this country!

Voitures électriques Norvège

For the first time, there are more electrified cars than internal combustion cars in the Norwegian vehicle fleet.

This historic situation comes from an analysis conducted by our Norwegian colleagues at Bilbransje24 based on recent car sales figures in Norway. It is the result of a historically low number of new petrol and diesel car sales, combined with a record share of electric car registrations. In the end, the vehicle fleet has made this radical shift. It’s not really a surprise given how Scandinavian countries are at the forefront of the transition to fully electric vehicles. This paradigm shift has been encouraged, of course, by purchase incentives but, more importantly, by charging infrastructure. It shows that with a little goodwill, miracles can happen.

This did not happen overnight, but the evolution has become more pronounced as more internal combustion engine cars were scrapped and replaced with hybrid and electric cars. The Norwegian population simply understood the meaning of this evolution before everyone else. The shift began to occur around 2010 when the share of diesel in new car sales gradually decreased. To understand Norway’s lead, it is worth noting that at that time the rest of Europe was still heavily relying on this type of engine while Tesla launched the Model S and China was putting all its efforts into developing electric drivetrains!

Today, all electric cars represent 26.2% of the vehicles on the road in Norway. Furthermore, the car clientele is relatively young, and Norway is experiencing a trend towards an overall rejuvenation of its population. This population has a very clear vision of ecological issues and thus the future of the automotive industry.
