Soon more autonomy in the Volkswagen ID.Buzz?

The big MPV from Volkswagen, the stylish ID.Buzz, could benefit from a new battery to address its range issue.

Being unconventional is a quality in our society where everything is gray and similar. However, this distinction can attract criticism when it results in a product that is both expensive and only moderately effective. This is essentially the synthesis that best defines the very likeable Volkswagen ID.Buzz.

Large, heavy, with a somewhat un-aerodynamic profile, it struggles to offer top-tier electric performance with a very low real-world range, around 250 kilometers on the highway at 130 km/h and 350 km off it.

The trick of a new battery?

However, the magic of electric vehicles is that the technical components are easily interchangeable and upgradeable as long as they fit well-defined locations. Motors, batteries, power electronics, etc., everything can be quickly updated without breaking the bank.

At Volkswagen, a new battery has appeared on the large ID.7 sedan, while now the “small” ID.3 benefits from the current battery of the ID.Buzz. Are you following us? The ID.Buzz currently enjoys a net capacity of 77 kWh, which is already being transferred to the ID.3 GTX.

As for the ID.7, it debuts a new net capacity of 86 kWh with a modernized energy delivery strategy. As a result, the ID.7 now sees its range leap beyond 600 km. In the case of the ID.Buzz, such a battery, even with a capacity not much larger on paper, could still change quite a bit.

The range should reasonably increase by about a hundred kilometers, a “game changer” combined with a charging power that would rise from 11 to 22 kW on alternating current, and from 170 to 200 kW on direct current.

With more than 350 km of real range on the highway and charging times of around thirty minutes, long family trips in a Volkswagen ID.Buzz would no longer be a real problem.
