Smart turns upside down to showcase its new SUV

Smart has confirmed a smart date and a rather surprising location for the unveiling of its new SUV #5.

As for the date chosen by Smart, nothing particularly surprising about August 28. The holidays are ending, and we are getting back to work and our computer screens, ensuring good media exposure for the launch of a new vehicle. The location, however, is more unexpected as the model will be unveiled in Australia. The reveal will, of course, be broadcast live worldwide.

One thing is certain from the first images of development vehicles that Smart has shared with us. The era of the small urban Fortwo is definitely over. Smart is no longer just a name, and we will have to get used to it.

No more small Smarts

Don’t look for any ownership, partnership, or historical link between Smart and Australia; you won’t find any. Smart now belongs to the Geely Group and is therefore 100% Chinese, so there is no connection between the Middle Kingdom and the Australian bush. The only explanation comes from the fact that Smart defines this new model as a “Contemporary Adventurer.” We will have to work with that, but going to the antipodes to lend a rugged credibility to a four-wheeled vehicle is really not the most obvious solution. A little tour through the streets of Paris, with its loose cobblestones and potholes, would have sufficed to prove its adventurous spirit… At least there should be kangaroos and koalas to make it visually appealing and cute. A little lookalike of Crocodile Dundee would complete the picture!

Smart promises us that the #5 should showcase only slight variations from the Smart concept #5 that we presented to you in April of this year. However, we are still eager to see if the folding furniture will be included. We will finally find out if the rumors regarding batteries and powertrains are accurate. Indeed, a block of XXL cells of 100 kWh and over 600 horsepower in the Brabus trim is being announced.
