Smart #1 Brabus 2022 01

The new Smart #1 generation, fully electric and classified as a compact SUV, features a more aggressive Brabus version.

Brabus is not, like AMG, a subsidiary responsible for sporty versions of Mercedes-Benz. However, it’s effectively the same. New models often have their performance variants from the outset. Although Smart is shared between the German automaker and the Chinese Geely (50-50), this relationship continues.

Visual Changes

While AMG puts its stamp on powerful Mercedes, Brabus has been handling Smart models for 20 years. And it does so quite literally, as they continue with electric versions and the new Smart #1.

“The Smart #1 Brabus reimagines the urban high-performance driving experience for the electric mobility era”, states vice-president of sales Mandy Zhang. Isn’t it a bit out of our time, where cities are precisely seeking to calm speed and share the road? “The model grabs attention and is more sporty than ever, full of personality and guaranteed to wow customers and turn heads everywhere”, Zhang continues.

The Smart #1 receives a set of aesthetic modifications. On the outside, this includes the double hood vent – a remnant of the thermal engine -, a red grille, and a black front splitter.

The electric SUV continues with dedicated 19-inch wheels, black badges, and a small rear roof spoiler. The interior also features sun visors for front passengers, microfibre black-red suede upholstery, aluminum pedals, and Brabus logos (Alcantara steering wheel, headrest supports).

Towards a 400-horsepower Smart?

For now, Smart says nothing about the powertrain, but does the Brabus badge imply? Not necessarily, as the sporty badge is not automatically synonymous with increased performance. The recent Mercedes EQS kit proves this; it was more visual and aerodynamic. Additionally, the latest Smart electric models, the Fortwo and Forfour EQ Brabus, only feature aesthetic kits.

Should we then believe the rumors that the Smart #1 Brabus will reach 400 horsepower? For us, it’s a no. Meanwhile, the electric SUV retains its 200 kW (272 hp) motor and 343 Nm of torque. And that’s plenty for a Smart, although its weight of 1,820 kg will limit performance. The reason? The 66 kWh battery, which offers an estimated range of around 430 km.

As for availability, this Smart #1 Brabus is expected to arrive sometime in 2023.
