Toyota hybrid engine

With its new engine, Toyota is rethinking its hybrid technology to reduce consumption and streamline its production.

Toyota still aims to advance hybrid technology. The Japanese manufacturer is developing a new generation of engines with one goal: to reduce fuel consumption by more than 15%. This ambition has been announced, and the results will need to be confirmed in future models.

At the core of the system is a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions. Designed from the start to operate with electric assistance, this unit adopts a modular architecture. Its naturally aspirated variant is intended to cover the performance levels currently provided by Toyota’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder and 1.5-liter three-cylinder engines.

Consume 15% less

The effort goes beyond just the thermal engine. Electric machines, inverters, and control units are becoming lighter and more compact. The power electronics, in particular, utilize silicon carbide to limit energy losses. This is complemented by reduced mechanical friction and optimized thermal management.

The compactness of the assembly should also allow for a lower hood. Designers will thus gain more freedom, while improved aerodynamics will contribute to the goal of efficiency.

This evolution mainly supports the development of a common platform for electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid cars. Toyota aims to integrate these different drivetrains without compromising habitability or imposing radically different silhouettes.

The industrial stakes are also significant: to share more components and spread investments over higher volumes. Factories will be able to adjust their production based on demand for each technology.

Finally, Toyota plans to increase sales of its hybrid systems to other manufacturers. The statement, however, does not specify a commercialization timeline, the models involved, or the benchmark used to calculate the announced consumption gains.
