Cheaper electric bikes: Decathlon focuses on renting second-hand ones

With its “re-lease” offer, Decathlon is renting out refurbished bicycles, with monthly payments almost cut in half.

An electric bike finishing its first rental contract does not necessarily have worn-out wheels. After three years of daily rides, it can still accompany a new cyclist for a long time. This is the foundation on which Decathlon Belgium builds its “re-lease” offer.

After new purchases and the resale of second-hand items, the brand is developing a third option: the rental of bikes that have already been rented. The principle consists of collecting the machines at the end of their contracts, refurbishing them, and then entrusting them to a new user. A second life for the bike, with a lighter bill.

An electric cargo bike for 23 euros per month

In the examples published by Decathlon, the longtail electric cargo bike E-three 500 goes from 45 euros per month in the first lease to 23 euros in re-rental. These figures concern the Belgian system: no availability of this offer in France is confirmed in the announcement.

Before hitting the road again, the bikes go through the refurbishment center in Mechelen. Technical checks, necessary repairs, and tests help to select those that can start a new contract. Not all are automatically re-rented.

Extending the lifespan of bikes rather than multiplying purchases

The initiative addresses a concrete obstacle: the entry price for electric bikes. Renting a refurbished model can allow for access to equipment that has previously been too expensive while extending its use.

It will naturally be necessary to examine the commitment duration, the included services, and the total cost of each contract. But the idea deserves recognition: to democratize electric mobility, making better use of existing bikes can be just as relevant as launching new models. Progress also comes from products that last; now it’s a matter of developing this offer and hoping for its arrival in France.
