Tesla Aims to Save Lives with Its FSD

With a new collision avoidance feature, Tesla gives its FSD a relevant role: intervening when the driver is at risk of making the mistake of a lifetime.

What if the best use of FSD also involved helping us while we drive? Long associated with promises of autonomous driving, Tesla’s software explores a concrete mission: to try to mitigate certain human errors.

The context deserves clarification. In California, Tesla had to correct a misleading communication regarding the capabilities of its systems, particularly emphasizing that FSD remains supervised. Thus, it does not transform a particular car into an autonomous vehicle, as the manufacturer also reminds us.

The new feature reported by Teslarati cleverly aligns with this reality. Named Automatic Collision Evasion, it accompanies the 2026.27.6 update, distributed to certain vehicles. Its principle: activate FSD during manual driving to attempt to secure the situation, and then continue driving.

FSD is your friend

Two scenarios are described: an imminent head-on collision that braking alone might not avoid; detected inattention, for example, when the driver turns to the back seat, or a potentially involuntary deactivation of FSD.

Here is the software promoted as a super assistant. The idea is relevant: to exploit its perception and driving capabilities to add a safety net when the human fails. The driver monitors the system, which can also keep an eye on them.

This evolution could also serve Tesla’s image and limit the consequences of accidents. However, nothing suggests that avoiding lawsuits is its primary motivation.

It remains to measure the actual effectiveness of the system and the accuracy of its interventions. Human supervision remains essential. But this ambition makes sense: a technology can provide valuable services without having resolved all the challenges of autonomous driving.
