Mercedes inaugurates its future factory in Hungary

Mercedes Class C

Mercedes-Benz opens one of the most modern next-generation automotive plants in Europe in Kecskemét, Hungary.

Mercedes-Benz takes a new step in its electrification strategy by inaugurating the extension of its Kecskemét plant in Hungary. With an investment of approximately one billion euros, the manufacturer is transforming this site into a true factory of the future, dedicated to more flexible, more digital, and more sustainable production.

The area of the complex increases from 200 to 440 hectares, making Kecskemét the largest automotive plant in Hungary and one of the most important industrial sites in the global Mercedes-Benz network. Two new assembly and body shops, a second stamping unit, a state-of-the-art paint shop, and a battery assembly plant complete the facilities. More than 5,000 employees are already working there.

The Strategic Challenge of the Mercedes C-Class

This ramp-up accompanies the start of production of the new Mercedes-Benz electric C-Class, the first 100% electric model from the “core” range manufactured on-site. Staying true to its “local for local” strategy, Mercedes is now manufacturing batteries and many essential components on-site to secure its supply chains and reduce logistics costs.

The Hungarian plant is also designed to quickly adapt to demand. Both thermal and electric models can be produced simultaneously, while the new buildings are exclusively dedicated to electric vehicles. In the future, the electric Mercedes GLC can be assembled both in Bremen and Kecskemét, while the upcoming compact version of the G-Class will be produced exclusively in Hungary.

This Mercedes plant in Hungary also focuses on the most advanced technologies. Thanks to the digital platform MO360, a digital twin developed with NVIDIA Omniverse, and artificial intelligence, manufacturing processes are simulated, managed, and monitored in real time to improve quality and productivity.

Finally, sustainability is a central focus. A 42.3 MWp photovoltaic park provides nearly 25% of the site’s energy needs, while the new paint shop reduces its energy consumption by 20% and its CO₂ emissions by nearly 80%.
