Autonomous taxis are invading Europe!

véhicules autonomes

For a long time trailing behind the United States and China, Europe is now accelerating the development of autonomous vehicles.

Amid pilot programs, urban experiments, and new regulations, autonomous vehicle projects are multiplying across the continent. The goal is clear: to prepare for the arrival of the first large-scale mobility services.

Bolt, Pony.ai, and Stellantis lead the way.

The latest initiative has Bolt, Pony.ai, and Stellantis announcing the launch of a pilot program for autonomous mobility in Luxembourg. This “living lab” will allow real-world testing of Pony.ai’s Gen-7 autonomous vehicles, integrated with a Stellantis van based on the L4-Ready Platform. The trials will focus on safety, performance, fleet management, and integrating the vehicles into ride-booking platforms. Ultimately, the three partners aim to achieve a level of maturity sufficient for driverless operation.

This announcement comes as Europe seeks to accelerate the deployment of robotaxis. In early June, eighteen EU member states signed a joint declaration to coordinate cross-border trials of autonomous vehicles and harmonize regulatory procedures.

The objective is to create a favorable environment for the development of commercial autonomous mobility services throughout the European market.

Projects are emerging everywhere.

Initiatives are already multiplying. In Croatia, Pony.ai, Uber, and Verne are preparing to launch the first European robotaxi service in Zagreb. In Switzerland, experiments involving Apollo Go and Swiss Post are also set to evaluate the integration of driverless vehicles into daily transport services.

According to industry projections, over 120,000 robotaxis could be operating in Europe by 2035. While several challenges remain to be addressed, particularly on the regulatory and societal fronts, one thing is certain: the race for autonomous vehicles has indeed begun. And Europe intends to play a major role in this new revolution of mobility.
