BYD pays in case of accident under assisted driving

The Chinese manufacturer BYD will cover damages incurred while using its Urban NOA assisted driving system in China.

With the announcement of full coverage for damages incurred while using its Urban NOA assisted driving system in China, BYD takes a step that could mark a turning point in the automotive industry. More than a technological advancement, this decision reflects a deep paradigm shift: the Chinese manufacturer is no longer merely guaranteeing a vehicle as a mechanical object, but also the decisions made by its software.

Specifically, buyers of vehicles equipped with the God’s Eye 5.0 system, as well as owners who perform the update, will benefit for one year from coverage for economic losses resulting from an accident for which legal liability is established while the Urban NOA function is used in accordance with current regulations.

Until now, car manufacturers primarily guaranteed the reliability of their components: engine, battery, transmission, or onboard electronics. With this new offer, BYD assumes part of the risk associated with the behavior of its driving assistance system. The promise is no longer just “our car works”, but “our artificial intelligence is reliable enough that we accept the financial consequences.”

BYD wants to reassure

This strategy is in line with the approach taken with the Blade Battery. After seeking to reassure customers about battery safety during the electrification phase, BYD now aims to address the questions raised by the rise of automated driving technologies.

The group justifies this confidence by the scale of its connected fleet, boasting over 3.15 million vehicles equipped with driving assistance systems, and by the 200 million kilometers traveled daily that feed the continuous improvement of its algorithms.
