Heatwave: six tips to protect your electric scooter
As temperatures rise, Segway, a specialist in electric mobility, reminds users of the best practices to maintain their electric scooters.
Heatwaves not only challenge users but also take a toll on electric scooters. To avoid premature battery wear and maintain vehicle performance, Maximilian Bermond, Director of Segway France, highlights some good practices to adopt during the summer.
First reflex: avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. A scooter left on hot asphalt, an exposed balcony, or in the trunk of a car can quickly see its lithium-ion battery temperature rise. Ideally, it should be stored in a temperate place, between 10 and 25 °C, such as a ventilated garage or a living space.
Precautions at a stop and in motion
While in motion, it’s also better to adopt a smooth driving style. Long climbs at full power or repeated accelerations put more strain on the motor and electronics, which heat up more quickly when temperatures rise.
After a ride in high heat, it is recommended to wait between 15 to 30 minutes before recharging the battery to allow it to cool down. Segway also advises against charging to 100% when maximum range is not necessary. Keeping the charge level between 20 and 80% helps to limit thermal stress on the cells.

Another recommendation: prefer a slow charge rather than a fast charge during heatwaves to reduce the heat generated inside the battery.
Finally, for prolonged storage, Segway recommends leaving the battery charged to 50 or 60%, which is considered optimal for preserving its longevity.
