Mercedes launches the first electric school truck!

This transformed Mercedes eActros 600 into a training truck marks a key milestone in driver training.

In Isques, Pas-de-Calais, a training center is innovating by integrating into its fleet a truck like no other: a Mercedes eActros 600 converted into a training vehicle. A pioneering initiative that supports the energy transition in road transport and enhances the learning of electric truck driving.

“We must always move forward,” summarizes Jean-Marie Sauvage, head of the ECF Pro Boulogne-sur-Mer center alongside his daughters Virginie and Peggy. Their organization, which operates 28 training trucks across nine locations, now hosts the first 100% electric training heavy-duty vehicle in France. A strategic choice, as the transport sector gradually shifts towards decarbonized engines and sustainable mobility solutions.

For Virginie Sauvage, the goal is clear: to adapt training to the evolutions of the road transport market. “Road transport is undergoing a major transformation, and it is essential that training keeps pace with these changes.” With this new educational tool, trainees can gain hands-on experience with driving an electric truck, which is still relatively uncommon in heavy transport.

This project was carried out with the support of the local distributor of the German manufacturer, as well as Opco Mobilités, which contributed to the financing of the vehicle and the charging station installed at the Isques site. This commitment underscores the importance of vocational training in the energy transition of the sector.

Before entering service, the truck was tailored to meet the specific needs of training. The coachbuilder Brevet replaced the sleeper with a four-seat rear bench, allowing multiple students to be accommodated. A unique feature of this training truck is the addition of two extra pedals on the passenger side, providing the instructor with total control of the vehicle.

A dedicated screen completes the setup, transmitting real-time images from the dashboard recorded by an onboard camera, allowing for precise educational tracking. Except for these adaptations, this Mercedes eActros 600 remains compliant with the models already operating in Europe, thus preparing drivers for the realities of electric transport.
