This racing Mazda captures CO2!
Mazda tests a real-world CO2 capture system on board, a world first in motorsport.
Mazda has taken a new step in its sustainable mobility strategy by launching the first trials of its Mazda Mobile Carbon Capture system, installed directly on a race vehicle. This demonstration took place during the Super Taikyu Series finale on November 15 and 16, marking the first public use of this technology in competition.
Presented at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, the project aligns with Mazda’s stated vision: to achieve a mobility by 2035 where driving will help to reduce CO2 emissions. The approach is based on a clear principle: to combine carbon-neutral fuels with direct capture of CO2 emitted by the vehicle, thereby reducing the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere based on the distance traveled.
Mazda wants to do better than well
For this first experiment, Mazda equipped the MAZDA SPIRIT RACING 3 Future Concept with a module installed in the lower rear part of the chassis. The vehicle ran on HVO biodiesel, a fuel already used in Europe and considered carbon-neutral. The device relies on a key material, zeolite, which has a porous structure that allows it to adsorb the CO2 present in exhaust gases. Engineers were able to confirm during the race that the technology can effectively capture a portion of the emissions.
Mazda plans to continue the trials during the next season of the Super Taikyu Series to increase recovery rates and refine the system’s behavior under intensive use. These extreme condition tests are intended to improve the efficiency, durability, and weight of the equipment before potential larger-scale developments.
