BMW Z4 Final Edition: the farewell of the roadster that loved freedom

BMW Z4

There are cars that do more than just exist: they embody a state of mind. The BMW Z4 is one of them.

With the announcement of its Final Edition, production of which will end in March 2026, a whole chapter of automotive pleasure is about to bow out with this Z4’s last dance. And a somewhat nostalgic question arises: will we ever see an electric roadster capable of succeeding it?

This Final Edition, available for only a few months, celebrates over twenty years of an iconic model. Its exclusive Frozen Black color, matte finish, combined with the glossy Shadow Line, immediately sets the tone: understated, taut, sporty. The red M Sport brakes enhance this contrast, as do the red stitching that runs throughout the cabin, reaching the M steering wheel in Alcantara. A strong visual signature for a model that could quickly become a collector’s item.

The special edition is available across the range, from the 197 hp sDrive20i to the 258 hp sDrive30i, up to the majestic 340 hp inline six-cylinder M40i. A palette of reasonable powers, a contained weight, a simple philosophy: sensations without artifice.

The last roadster of its kind?

This is where nostalgia sets in. Because in a market dominated by electrification, there is currently no zero-emission alternative capable of taking up the torch. A small, light, playful roadster, driven solely by the pursuit of pleasure? The few existing electric models are powerful, certainly, but heavy—far too heavy to reclaim that mechanical spontaneity, that direct contact with the road, that feeling of being seated in the car, not on the technology.

Maybe tomorrow. When batteries are more compact, lighter, and more affordable. When a manufacturer has the courage to offer an electric convertible dedicated to pure pleasure, without the burden of batteries for hundreds of kilometers of autonomy. A few dozen, an ultra-quick charge, and room for enjoyment.

This Final Edition closes a story that began in 2002, itself heir to a long tradition of BMW Z roadsters, from the Z1 in 1989 to the fantastic Z8, including the Z3 and of course, the Z4. When production ceases, the segment will lose one of its last representatives. Enthusiasts will continue to hope that one day, a light electric sports car will find a way to recreate that very special magic.
