Takata Airbags: Suzuki Wants to Move On

Suzuki France intensifies its safety campaign related to Takata airbags, as a precaution.

The Takata airbag scandal remains one of the most significant in automotive history. Triggered in the early 2010s, it concerns devices that can explode upon deployment, projecting dangerous metal fragments. Worldwide, more than 100 million vehicles have been recalled. In France, the Ministry of Transport now estimates that 2.5 million cars are affected, including 1.7 million that have been banned from circulation. Authorities require all faulty airbags to be replaced by the end of 2026.

Suzuki no longer wants to hear about Takata

In this context, Suzuki France recalls that no vehicle sold in mainland France or overseas territories has been equipped with Takata airbags containing ammonium nitrate, the most dangerous version of the device. However, some Grand Vitaras produced between 1998 and 2000 were fitted with a different type of Takata airbag that risked incomplete deployment in the event of an accident. No incidents have been reported, neither in France nor abroad.

As a precaution, the brand launched a recall campaign in January 2020 targeting 3,408 vehicles. Stop drive messages were sent out in Mayotte and Réunion in spring 2024, then in Corsica and mainland France in the following months. To date, 832 Grand Vitaras still in circulation have been inspected at authorized Suzuki networks, with a complete check and, in some cases, airbag replacement.
