Market: Electric cars account for 10% of sales in January 2022
This page is translated from the original post "Marché : la voiture électrique à 10% des ventes en janvier 2022" in French.

With more than 10,000 units sold in January 2022, the electric car accounts for one in ten registrations in France.
The French automotive market is sinking into gloom. After a sluggish 2021 continuing from 2020, the 2022 edition is starting very slowly. With a decline of 18.7%, January registrations reached only 102,899 vehicles. The same trend is observed for vans (-19%), while trucks are up slightly (+0.4%).
Electric up by 58%
In this environment, electric vehicles are standing out. With 10,217 cars last month, this segment grew by 58% and now holds a 9.9% market share. This is almost double January 2021’s 5.1% (6,469 units), but still far from China’s 17% electric vehicle share in 2021.
For comparison, gasoline vehicles fell by 31%, diesel by 41%, while hybrids jumped by 13%. Plug-in hybrids remain stable compared to 2021, but their share increases to 7.7%, and LPG vehicles grew by 14%, exceeding 3,400 units. Still very minority, E85 accounts for just over 1% of the market.
- Gasoline 37.7%
- Hybrids* 22%
- Diesel 18.3%
- Electric 9.9%
- Plug-in hybrid 7.7%
- LPG 3.3%
- E85 1%
*including mild hybrid like MHEV/48V
Peugeot Dominates the Market
By brand, Peugeot is the number one in France despite a 21.5% drop (20,458 units), still ahead of Renault (-17%) and Citroën (-14%). Dacia takes the 4th spot, surpassing Toyota and Volkswagen. The Korean brands Hyundai and Kia rank 7th and 8th, with Ford and Opel remaining in the Top 10.
By models, the top three are dominated by the Peugeot 208, followed by the Renault Clio and Peugeot 2008. Next are the Citroën C3, Peugeot 3008, Renault Captur—close in market share—and Dacia Sandero. The Peugeot 308, Renault Arkana, and Dacia Duster round out the Top 10.
For electric vehicles, we await the official figures, but we observe that the Dacia Spring (1,494 units) has the luxury of surpassing the Renault ZOE (1,362 units).
