Tern NBD, small and practical for those forgetful about cycling

Specialist in small cargo and folding bikes, the Taiwanese manufacturer Tern is launching a new electric model aimed at the overlooked cyclists, the NBD.
Founded in 2011 by Florence Shen and Joshua Hon, Tern now has solid experience and already some reputation. Its bikes, whether foldable or cargo, occupy a niche in cycling. For its 11th year, the Taiwanese brand unveils the NBD, “New Bike Day”.
A bike for all the overlooked?
As its name indicates, “New Bike Day” aims to reach a wide range of people to get on a bike. This Tern NBD claims to fall into the category of “urban electric assistance bikes with ultra-low frames”. Quite a statement. Moreover, its open frame, low saddle, and small 20-inch wheels are ideal for accessibility, in the spirit of the HSD.

“What really motivated us about the NBD are its special features that we’ve added for unconventional cyclists,” declares Josh Hon, “I mean those who are small and have trouble finding a suitable bike, or seniors who haven’t ridden in a while, or cyclists with balance or physical issues, or those intimidated by the size and weight of a standard electric bike.”
A Bosch system for the Tern NBD
Besides its low center of gravity architecture, its high handlebar offers a very comfortable Dutch-style riding position. Urban like all the other models from the brand, the Tern NBD comes with fenders, a kickstand, and a rear rack capable of carrying 27 kg. An optional front rack can support up to 20 kg.
The total payload capacity of the electric bike is 140 kg, with a recommended rider height between 147 and 190 cm according to the official statement. It is equipped with Schwalbe Big Apple tires, brake by Magura MT4 hydraulic discs. Lastly, the NBD features a parking function that allows for vertical stance. The stem rotates the handlebar backward, enabling lifting the bike onto its height before folding the handlebar.
Two models P8i and S5i
The electric part of the Tern NBD is centrally positioned. The Bosch motor is located in the crankset, with the battery fitting between the seat tube and the rear wheel. The battery is removable for recharging and for security reasons. Two versions of the Tern NBD are available. The P8i has a 50 Nm motor and 400 Wh battery, while the S5i features a 65 Nm motor and a 500 Wh pack.

The manufacturer has also added a chainguard. It covers the 8-speed Shimano derailleur to prevent minor accidents or stains, as well as the Gates belt with Shimano 5-speed automatic transmission.
Launch of the Tern NBD in 2023
However, the Tern NBD does not reveal all its figures yet. It will only be available early 2023, starting with two models S5i and P8i, at a starting price of 3,999 euros in Europe.
