AVERE-France publishes the electric vehicle charging barometer, listing 64,546 charging points in June, a +48% increase year-on-year.

The goal of 100,000 charging stations, once championed by former Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari now reconverted into Hopium, is still far off. 10,000 points in 2015, 20,000 in 2017, and over 33,000 in 2020, growth has been slow. Fortunately, 2021 showed signs of hope, with nearly 54,000 charging points. And 2022 is on track for a high growth rate according to the July 2022 Gireve barometer.

Charging points doubled since November 2020

In total, the AVERE-France association reports 64,546 charging points as of June 30, 2022. This is a 48% increase compared to June 2021 and doubles in eighteen months. These points are present at 25,624 stations across France. Their distribution is nearly balanced by type of location: 38% in parking lots, 30% in commercial areas, and 28% on roadsides.

In terms of power, 9 out of 10 charging points offer less than 22 kW, including 35% at less than 7 kW. Only 10% are fast charging points exceeding 22 kW, and fewer than 2,000 outlets exceed 50 kW. In the country, fewer than 500 are ultra-fast (>150 kW), such as Tesla, Ionity, Fastned, Electra, Allego, TotalEnergies, or IECharge.

By region, three stand out with over 10% of fast chargers. These are the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regions.

60% of motorway service areas equipped

“In this regard, we can affirm, alongside ASFA, that 60% of the service areas of the concession networks were equipped, as of June 30, 2022, with fast charging”, states Clément Molizon, general director of AVERE-France, “by the end of the year, 100% of service areas should be equipped. This prerequisite naturally doesn’t prevent planning your trip, especially to locate charging points and take advantage of breaks to recharge.”
