From a distance, the TE-1 doesn’t seem revolutionary. Yet, this motorcycle opens a new chapter in Triumph’s history.

While the automotive industry has been shifting towards electric vehicles for several years, motorcycle manufacturers as a whole have been somewhat more hesitant. It’s true that they are less affected by stricter regulations, but how long will this situation last?

Rather than waiting for legislation to address the issue, some prefer to work on electric technology today. This is notably the case for Triumph, which has made significant progress with its TE-1 prototype.

After providing numerous updates on the TE-1 over the past months, the manufacturer shares the results of tests conducted so far. And naturally, the outlook is very positive: Triumph claims to have exceeded its goals in several areas.

160 km range and blazing acceleration for Triumph’s first electric motorcycle

Many figures have been shared to support these enthusiastic claims. For example, the prototype has a range of 160 km, and charges from 0 to 80% in 20 minutes. With an electric motor delivering up to 177 hp at peak, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.6 seconds, and from 0 to 100 mph (161 km/h) in 6.7 seconds. Triumph has also managed to keep the TE-1’s weight at 225 kilograms. According to the brand, this represents a roughly 25% improvement over competing motorcycles.

Triumph collaborated with several partners to bring the project to fruition. For instance, the battery pack was supplied by Williams Advanced Engineering. The motor was provided by Integral Powertrain, while the control unit was developed with the help of the University of Warwick.

The Triumph TE-1 will not be sold as-is. However, it offers insights into what future Triumph electric motorcycles will look like.
