81 years ago, America finally started making cars again

On August 30, 1945, Hudson resumed the production of passenger cars in Detroit. After more than three years dedicated to the war effort, the American automobile industry was finally returning to its original trade.

Imagine the United States without new cars. For the country of Ford, Chevrolet, and Cadillac, the idea seems almost inconceivable. Yet, it was a reality for a large part of World War II.

After the United States entered the war, the automobile industry was mobilized at a spectacular speed. By early 1942, the production of passenger cars was practically halted. The massive factories of Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Hudson, and other manufacturers changed their trade: their assembly lines now produced airplane engines, trucks, tanks, and military equipment.

For more than three years, buying a new car in the United States became nearly impossible. Americans made their old cars last, saved their tires, and also had to deal with gasoline rationing.

In 1945, American cars returned to the assembly lines

Then came the end of the war. Manufacturers had to convert their factories and gradually restart American automobile production.

On August 30, 1945, a Hudson Super Six rolled off the assembly line in Detroit. It symbolized Hudson’s return to making passenger cars after several years dedicated to the war effort.

There was no question of technological revolution. The priority was to produce quickly, and raw materials remained difficult to obtain. Thus, the first American cars after the war largely replicated models designed before 1942, slightly modernized.

Customers? They didn’t care. After several years without new models, demand soared, and waiting lists grew longer. This Hudson thus represents much more than just an industrial comeback.

On August 30, 1945, in the United States, being able to manufacture a simple car again was already a remarkable symbol of return to normal life.
