Lyon: Good news, transportation prices will not skyrocket in 2023

Sytral Mobility announces the new 2023 fares for tickets and subscriptions across various transportation networks in Lyon.

While inflation is significant in the Paris region for transportation prices (+12% approximately), Lyon keeps its fares stable. Sytral Mobilités, the agency in charge of mobility in the Lyon metropolitan area, approved the new 2023 grid on December 8th.

A price increase lower than inflation 

“To continue improving our networks, we are forced to raise the prices of some tickets and subscriptions,” declares Bruno Bernard, president of Sytral Mobilités and the Lyon Metropolitan Area, who specifies that “young people aged 18 to 25 will not see their subscriptions increase, which accounts for nearly 60% of the 460,000 subscribers.”

The increase is thus 3.3% on average for the TCL (Lyon Public Transport) network and 3% for the Cars du Rhône and Libellule networks. It is “lower than the inflation rate”, adds B. Bernard, which reached 5.6% over the year according to INSEE.

The new transportation fares in Lyon

Sytral Mobilité recalls the funding of transportation in Lyon:

• Companies – mobility payment (40%)
• Users (25%)
• Communities – annual contribution (20%)
• Loans (15%)

The mobility contribution also increased on July 1, 2022, from 1.85% to 2% (TCL network). Lyon specifies that it has increased the budget by 50%, that is, 10 million euros more per year until 2026.

Monthly subscription prices for 2023

Here is the fare chart for monthly subscriptions in the Lyon region. Notably, prices for 4 to 25-year-olds will only increase from September 2023. For solidarity subscriptions (for example, student bursary holders), about 147,000 people are affected.
