Vélo durable électrique Roetz Life

Le Roetz Life is a modern and customizable electric bike, aiming to evolve over the years with durable components. But at what cost?

Roetz is already advocating for more sustainable bikes. This company from Amsterdam (Netherlands) produces Dutch bikes with a classic appearance, with a little extra. Hand-assembled in the local factory, the bikes also reuse many parts and materials, about 30% by volume of the production. But the Dutch firm wants to go further with its new electric bike, the Roetz Life.

A modular bike

Life, like “life” in English, is a very modern e-bike with a luxurious look. And that’s exactly what it aims for—to last a lifetime. It all starts with the zinc frame, designed in two parts, to allow future adaptation as a cargo bike or speedbike. Modular, the Roetz features components that can be easily modified and replaced.

In terms of internal propulsion, the motor and the 7-speed automatic transmission are combined at the pedal crank. Interestingly, the electric assist is transmitted via a flexible belt (more durable) on the left side of the bike. The removable battery— of “high quality and durable”— fits into the frame, blending in seamlessly. Most importantly, it is available in different capacities (500 or 840 Wh), with options to upgrade to different sizes in the future.

Roetz Life even pays close attention to its wheels: sensors detect low tire pressure (using Schwalbe Big Ben tires, in this case), and alert you when you need to change your brakes. At the handlebar, the small screen is simple, easily repairable and replaceable if damaged. The bike is also connected via an app, with GPS tracking in case of theft.

Expensive to buy? Yes, but rental options available

To avoid hindering the adoption of this electric bike, the brand offers two options: purchase and rental. The Roetz Life has a starting price of €3,375, with an option for a larger 840 Wh battery (€350) and an rear rack for €49.

In rental, the Dutch e-bike starts at €86/month with a 36-month lease, €96 for 24-month rental, or €107 for 12 months. The manufacturer includes theft and damage insurance, as well as 24-hour assistance at home during the first year. Today in pre-order, the Roetz electric bike will begin deliveries in February 2023.
