The Japanese automaker Nissan plans to (almost) switch entirely to hybrid and electric vehicles in Europe by 2026, before a general electric offensive by 2030.

The alliance between Renault and Nissan, now balanced (15% mutual stake), is each pursuing their own objectives. After Renault’s ambitions to segment into multiple companies including the electric brand Ampere via R5/R4 E-Tech and an electric Alpine brand, Nissan presents its updated plan.

98% hybrid and electric in Europe within three years

In November 2021, the Japanese manufacturer unveiled an “Ambition 2030” plan. In this plan, Nissan aimed to launch 23 electrified vehicles, 15 electric and 8 hybrids. But the automaker wants to go faster. It now promises 27 electrified cars. Of these new figures, 19 will be new electric models on the catalog by 2030. A global goal, not to be confused with the European range, which will only feature some of these models.

Specifically on the Old Continent, Nissan hopes to reach nearly 100% electrified sales by 2026. To be precise, the target is 98%, leaving perhaps 2% for Nissan Z, GT-R coupe, or the Townstar utility. Might the electric “Max-Out” convertible compensate?

An electric Micra in 2026

So how will Nissan’s range evolve over the next three years? The Nissan Micra electric will replace the current model in 2026. It will use the platform of the upcoming Renault 5 electric – CMF-BEV – and be manufactured in France, in Douai. Expect a range of 400 km for this upcoming city car. The Nissan LEAF compact will survive, but will likely switch to an SUV format by then, to support the large Ariya.

As for the current thermal SUVs, the Juke, Qashqai, and X-Trail, hybrids will dominate. The traditional hybrid versions, like the Renault-powered Juke, and the series e-Power hybrids like the Qashqai and X-Trail, will be the solutions. The latest petrol engine versions will disappear in the coming years. Regarding the Townstar ludospace, it already has a 100% electric variant that could become the only model in the lineup.
