Zeekr 001: 1,000 km range starting in 2023 thanks to CATL

With its new generation of batteries, CATL promises significant improvements in range. The technology will be debuting as early as 2023 with the Zeekr 001.
The Chinese manufacturer CATL has announced that Zeekr will use its new “Qilin” battery starting next year. In theory, some of the vehicles equipped with it will reach the symbolic milestone of 1,000 km of range.
The Qilin battery was publicly introduced a few weeks ago. The cells that compose it are directly integrated into the structure. This module-free architecture improves utilization volume and energy density, which peak at 72% and 255 Wh/kg respectively in the Qilin battery.
Record range… and ultra-fast charging
The Qilin battery also benefits from a completely redesigned thermal regulation system, with a cooling circuit placed directly between the cells. In addition to saving space, this process would also enhance maximum charging power. A car equipped with a Qilin battery could theoretically charge from 10 to 80% in 10 minutes on a suitable station.
Zeekr, which belongs to the Chinese group Geely, will debut the Qilin battery on two models in 2023: first on the minivan 009 in the first quarter, then on the twin-box sedan 001 in the second quarter. Only the latter will surpass 1,000 km of range.
The Zeekr 001 and 009 are built on a new platform called SAE (Sustainable Experience Architecture). This platform will also be used by Volvo and Polestar (owned by Geely), as well as by Smart (partially owned by the Chinese group). It is therefore possible that these brands will also benefit from CATL’s technology someday.
The Chinese manufacturer Seres has also signed a partnership with CATL for the supply of Qilin batteries. It will use them in its new generation of electric vehicles.
