Ford: a new (soon-to-be) carbon-neutral factory in Cologne

The American company has opened a new manufacturing site, the Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center, in Germany, where a new generation of vehicle will be produced.
It is the first Ford factory in the world to be carbon neutral. It is located in the Niehl plant near Cologne. For the inauguration of this new factory, the brand invested two billion euros.
How can it be carbon neutral?
The Cologne factory will therefore be carbon neutral. A world first, for this, the factory will use renewable electricity and 100% biogas. Recall that for carbon neutrality to exist, there must be a balance between carbon emissions and the absorption of carbon from the atmosphere by carbon sinks. However, the factory will not be carbon neutral by 2035. Why? The local energy provider must reduce emissions related to electricity supply by as much as possible, aiming for 100%. The primary goal is to reduce emissions by 60% by 2026.
An electric-only factory
It is an iconic factory that will produce Ford’s new electric lineup. Nearly 18 million vehicles have been produced at the factory since its creation. The goal is to produce 2,000,000 electric vehicles annually by 2026. Currently, production stands at 250,000. “The opening of the Cologne EV Center marks the beginning of a new generation of electric vehicles in Europe,” explained CEO Bill Ford.
The first electric vehicle produced at the factory will be the new Ford Explorer.
