The €49 offer to travel across all of Portugal, soon to be imitated in France?

This is an offer that has been available since August 1st, allowing travel across the country for 49 euros. Some conditions apply, but it resembles the Germany offer. When will France have a similar offer?

Many countries have recently launched offers for traveling within their borders. Portugal launched an offer in early August, following the one introduced by Germany in May. However, France does not yet have a monthly or yearly offer comparable to Germany’s, but it won’t be long before it does.

What does this offer consist of?

The National Train Pass allows travelers to move around the entire country for 49 euros per month. Moreover, this offer is available to all European travelers, including tourists, as announced on the Schengen Area portal. However, some routes are not included in this offer, notably Regua-Pocinho, Coimbra-Figueira da Foz, Pinhal Novo-Évora, Pinhal Novo-Vila Nova da Baronia, and Pinhal Novo-Tunes. High-speed trains, intercity, and regional trains are also not part of the country’s offer. Some metropolitan areas, such as Lisbon and even Porto, the country’s largest cities, do not benefit from this offer either. However, it is necessary to purchase a CP card costing 6 euros to enjoy this offer.

An offer already available in Germany

A similar offer already exists in Germany. Germans have benefited from an offer priced at 49 euros since early May. It includes all possible advantages within the country, such as metros, buses, trams, and regional trains. The same fare, but a much more attractive offer on the German side.

An summer pass for 2024 in France?

On August 7th, the Minister Delegate for Transport, Clément Beaune, spoke on RMC Story, about the subject. The minister stated, “by next summer, we want to have a pass for traveling, especially for young people at a reduced and unlimited rate.” He specifies that the price will be the same or perhaps more attractive compared to what can be found in Germany or more recently in Portugal. There was already a preview with the sale of 100,000 intercity tickets for the summer holidays.
